James Donnelly | Founder of Matchfit Football (Masters in Football Strength & Conditioning)

Time and time again, I’ve seen talented players overlooked at trials or released by clubs because they didn’t have the strength, speed or stamina to compete against bigger, faster players.
At the higher levels of the game, where almost every player is technically strong, athleticism often becomes the difference.
✅ Who gets to the ball first
✅ Who wins the physical battles
✅ Who can keep performing late into games
✅ Who stays fit and available
Without that physical edge, even very talented players can get lost in the crowd.
If a player isn’t physically ready, they’re often passed over, and parents are left frustrated, knowing their child has the ability but not the physical attributes to reach the next level.
Matchfit Football exists to change that.
My Journey
I spent 9 years at Wycombe Wanderers FC as a youth player and represented England Schoolboys U18s. Football was everything to me, until a serious hip injury at 19 ended my career. Doctors told me I’d never play again and warned I could even end up in a wheelchair.
I refused to accept that.
I turned to football specific strength and conditioning and committed myself to rebuilding my body. I studied relentlessly, completing a Sports Science degree, a Masters in Football Strength and Conditioning, and learning from world class specialists working with clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona and PSG.
Four years later, I made my comeback to semi professional football overseas, competing against professional and international players in my first comeback season. That experience confirmed what has become my mission to help young players realise ever since:
Fitness, strength, athleticism and injury resilience can make or break a footballer's career at any point.
Why Starting Early Matters
Research shows that the earlier a player begins strength and conditioning, the higher their level of athletic performance is likely to be as they get older. Players who delay this type of training often find themselves playing catch up.
That’s why my programmes are built for all levels, from complete beginners who have never followed structured S&C, to more advanced players who already have gym experience.
Suitable for ages 9 to 21, every player follows a clear framework that matches their stage of development and builds the physical qualities they need to perform and progress.
Why I Built Matchfit Football
In 2016, I launched Matchfit Football to provide the support I never had. Since then, I’ve helped over 50,000 players worldwide through my programmes. Many have gone on to earn academy contracts, secure professional deals, and represent their countries.
Parents tell me the same story time and time again.
Before, their child was technically talented but didn’t have the physical edge to compete.
After developing their athleticism, everything changed. They became faster, stronger and fitter, and most importantly, confident enough to finally play to their true potential.
My Philosophy for Parents
I know what you want for your child, the chance to show their ability fairly, without being overlooked simply because someone else developed earlier or looks more physically ready.
That’s why my programmes focus on:
✅ Closing the physical gap so technically talented late developers can compete with bigger and stronger players.
✅ Building long term athleticism, including strength, speed, stamina, agility and injury resilience.
✅ Developing confidence through preparation. When a player knows they can match anyone physically, their true ability comes out.
✅ Levelling the playing field. At higher levels, everyone can pass, dribble and shoot. The difference is who can keep up, get to the ball first, and perform at a high intensity for the full match.

Anze Pockaj | Nutrition Coach

Anže is our dedicated football nutrition coach, responsible for ensuring every player is fuelled correctly to support their training, recovery, and long-term development.
A former professional goalkeeper, his playing career was cut short by injury at the age of 22. This led him to fully immerse himself in sports nutrition, where he went on to specialise in football performance nutrition with a particular focus on youth athletes.
He understands the unique demands placed on young footballers who are balancing training, matches, school, and physical growth, and how nutrition plays a key role in supporting performance at every stage.
Anže creates our fully customised nutrition plans tailored to each player’s goals, needs, schedule, and lifestyle. This ensures players are not just eating well, but eating in a way that directly supports their performance on the pitch.
Our Mission
Too many players miss out not because they lack talent, but because they didn’t have the right physical training and support at the right time.
I built Matchfit Football to change that, so no parent has to watch their child be overlooked when what they really needed was a clear structure to develop their strength, speed and athleticism.
Because when a talented player develops the physical qualities to match their ability, everything changes.
That’s when scouts start to notice them.
That’s when opportunities begin to open up.
That’s when a player finally gets the chance to show what they’re truly capable of.
